Traditionally, a dock plate is made of aluminum, while a dock board is made of steel. The difference between the names is minor, but an aluminum dock plate cannot do the same job as a steel dock board can. Aluminum dock plates are only recommended for non-motorized use, such as dollies and handcarts. Dock boards can be used by all motorized transport equipment.
